# Translation

> Translate text with Snaply from the Writing Assistant menu or the Translation workspace, using a local or cloud model.

Snaply can translate selected text in place through the [Writing Assistant](/writing-assistant/overview), or translate longer passages in the dedicated **Translation** workspace.

## Translate Selected Text

1. Select text in a Mac app.
2. Open the Writing Assistant with its shortcut or selection button.
3. Choose **Translate**.
4. Pick a target language, or use the default shown in the menu.
5. Snaply returns the translated text in the assistant panel so you can apply it or continue in chat.

The language submenu supports favorites. Star a language to keep it near the top, and change the default target language in **Settings -> Writing Assistant**.

## Use The Translation Workspace

Open **Translation** from its app route when you want a source-and-result workspace:

1. Choose the source and target languages.
2. Type or paste the source text.
3. Select **Translate**.
4. Copy the result from the target panel.

Use the swap button to reverse the source and target languages.

## Supported Models

The Translation workspace offers:

* **Translation Expert**: a faster local model
* **Translation Expert Max**: a larger, slower local model for higher accuracy
* **Gemini 3 Flash**: a cloud option that requires a Google API key

Local models run on your Mac after download and initialization. The cloud option sends the text needed for the translation to Google.

## Privacy

With either local translation model, your text stays on your Mac. When you use Gemini, the source text is sent to Google according to your Google API settings. Cloud model keys are managed from the same API key dialog used by Writing Assistant.
