# Recording Controls

> Start, stop, cancel, and monitor Meeting Notes recordings from the app, tray, live indicator, or shortcut.

[Meeting Notes](/meeting-notes/overview) gives you a few ways to start recording, because meetings do not all start the same way.

## Start a Recording

You can start a meeting recording in a few ways:

1. From the **Meeting Notes** page in the Snaply app
2. From the **tray menu**
3. From an optional **Meeting Notes shortcut**
4. From an automatic meeting-detection prompt when a supported video call starts

## Stop Or Cancel

Once a meeting is recording, you can:

* **Stop and transcribe** to save and process the meeting
* **Pause** when you need a break, then **Resume** when the conversation continues. Paused time is not counted in the meeting duration.
* **Cancel** if you do not want to keep the recording

## Live Recording Indicator

Meeting Notes includes a live recording indicator you can show while a recording is active.

When enabled, it appears on the right side of your screen during recording. From there, you can open the live meeting, stop and transcribe, or cancel the capture.
It also exposes pause/resume controls while capture is active.

To change it:

1. Open **Settings -> Meeting Notes**
2. Toggle **Display live recording indicator**

## Before You Record

Snaply may ask you to complete setup before the first full recording:

* Microphone access
* System audio review
* Diarizer download and initialization on compatible Macs

Live transcription normally begins showing sentences after the first part of the recording. If it is unavailable, Snaply still saves the audio and runs the normal transcription pipeline when you finish.

If you try to start recording from a shortcut and setup is incomplete, Snaply can send you straight back to **Settings -> Meeting Notes**.

## What Audio Gets Captured

* Your microphone
* System audio, when macOS permissions allow it

For calls, System Audio is what helps Snaply hear the other participants instead of only you.

If you use a specific microphone, choose it from **Settings -> General -> Microphone** before recording.

If your Mac switches microphone input during a meeting, Snaply tries to follow the correct input and continue recording from the active microphone.

## Automatic Meeting Detection

When **Detect meeting start and end automatically** is enabled, Snaply can show a top-right suggestion when it detects a supported video call.

For supported calls, Snaply can ask whether you want to start taking notes when the call begins and whether you want to stop when the call ends.

You can change this in **Settings -> Meeting Notes**.

## Upload A Recording Instead

If the meeting already happened, click **Upload audio recording** from the Meeting Notes page.

Supported formats are:

* `WAV`
* `M4A`
* `MP3`

Snaply converts the file, transcribes it, and creates a meeting note from the default notes template. You can change the template or notes language afterward and regenerate the notes.
