# Shortcuts

> Choose a dictation shortcut from preset single-key and multi-key options, or record a custom one

Snaply lets you trigger [dictation](/dictation/overview) globally from almost anywhere on your Mac.

## Default Shortcut

By default, dictation uses **Right Command**.

* Press it once to start dictation.
* Press it again to stop and insert the transcription.
* Or hold it to talk and release it to stop.
* Press `Esc` while recording to cancel the current recording.

## How Shortcut Types Behave

### Single-key options

* `Fn`
* `Left Control`
* `Left Option`
* `Right Command`
* `Right Option`

Single-key shortcuts support both patterns:

* Tap once to start, then tap again to stop.
* Hold the key to talk, then release to stop.

### Multi-key options

* `Option + Space`
* `Control + Space`
* `Command + Shift + Space`
* `Option + Shift + Space`

Multi-key shortcuts behave like toggles: press once to start and press again to stop.

## Custom Shortcuts

If the presets do not fit your setup, you can record your own custom shortcut.

## Change the Dictation Shortcut

1. Go to **Settings -> Dictation**.
2. In the **Shortcuts** section, find **Start/Stop dictation**.
3. Click **Change**.
4. Pick a preset or record a custom shortcut.

## Shortcut Conflicts

Snaply keeps dictation shortcuts separate from other global shortcuts:

* If you choose the current **Writing Assistant** shortcut for dictation, Snaply asks whether the two shortcuts should be swapped.
* Meeting Notes should use a different shortcut.

This prevents one key press from opening the wrong workflow.
